The Stroke and Neurointervention Foundation (SNIF) and the Department of Interventional Neurology, National Institute of Neurosciences & Hospital (NINS&H), Dhaka entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 22 July 2021 to establish a structured fellowship programme in Neurointervention and Stroke and to develop the institute as a Centre of Excellence.

NINS&H is the apex referral centre for neurological disorders in Bangladesh and houses the country’s first comprehensive Department of Interventional Neurology and Stroke, established in 2013. The department operates two fully functional neurointervention units, supported by biplane and single-plane cath labs and a 100-bed comprehensive stroke unit.

Despite a high national burden of stroke, Bangladesh lacks a formal, in-country advanced training programme in neurointervention. Until now, physicians have had to seek overseas training. This collaboration addresses that gap by developing a structured programme within Bangladesh in partnership with SNIF.

Fellowship and Academic Collaboration

Under this MoU, SNIF and NINS&H have jointly established the SNIF–NINS Fellowship in Neurointervention and Stroke, a 21-month structured post-doctoral training programme. The fellowship aims to build both knowledge and procedural skills in neurointervention and to develop trained specialists capable of serving across Bangladesh.

The programme is supported by NINS&H’s clinical infrastructure and faculty, with SNIF providing academic, scientific, and educational collaboration. Training includes clinical exposure, academic activities, research participation, and international exchange opportunities.

Programme Leadership

Faculty includes senior specialists from NINS&H and affiliated institutions, with additional national and international faculty appointed as required

Centre of Excellence

As part of this institutional development initiative, the collaboration also aims to develop a Comprehensive Stroke and Neurointervention Centre within the Department of Interventional Neurology at NINS&H. This includes advanced cath lab facilities, dedicated neuro-ICU support, stroke triage systems, and structured academic and research activities.

Looking Ahead

This collaboration is intended to strengthen neurointervention capacity within Bangladesh, reduce dependence on overseas training, and support the development of skilled human resources in stroke and neurovascular care. The programme also creates opportunities for academic exchange, collaborative research, and regional training within South and South-East Asia.
