Surabaya, Sept 14, 2021 — The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga (FK UNAIR) and the Stroke and Neurointervention Foundation (SNIF) formally signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) focused on education and research collaboration on 14 September 2021.

MoA Signing

This MoA formalizes a collaborative relationship that began in 2010. The agreement was signed by Prof. Dr. dr. Budi Santoso, Sp.OG(K), Dean of FK UNAIR, and Prof. Shakir Husain, MD, DM, FINR, Deputy Head of Clinical Interventional Neuroradiology at the University Hospital of Zurich, Switzerland.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Budi Santoso highlighted Prof. Shakir’s expertise in neurointervention, a specialized approach used to treat stroke by addressing bleeding and vascular blockages directly within the brain. He emphasized that the collaboration is intended to extend beyond academic exchange to include skill development, particularly for Neurology Specialist trainees at FK UNAIR. “Equipping our Neurology Specialist students with neurointervention expertise will enhance both education and healthcare services in Indonesia,” said Prof. Bus.

Given the high burden of stroke in Indonesia, the collaboration is expected to contribute positively to both medical education and clinical practice. The Dean also expressed hope that similar collaborations would be adopted by other departments within the institution.

Looking Forward

Prof. Shakir Husain welcomed the agreement and expressed interest in a bilateral exchange of knowledge and experience, noting that learning would take place in both directions—from SNIF to FK UNAIR and vice versa.

Following the MoA signing, Prof. Shakir delivered a lecture on the comprehensive management of acute ischemic stroke, including perspectives on future developments in neurointerventional care.
